Tom ka gai. Mmmmmmmm!

A couple of weeks ago the Boise Weekly food review took me to Chiang Mai Thai, where I felt quite welcomed and laughed a lot. The chef’s wife, Muck, is very charismatic & quite adorable. In the photo below, some of the folks at this booth were claiming to be about 17 years old. Muck turned to the guy on the left and jokingly said, “So you must be their grandpa!”

My synopsis:  Although it wouldn’t be one of my staple dishes, the red curry with pineapple & prawns was wonderful. And, it does earn a spot on my list of special dishes to definitely order again. With ease, Chiang Mai runs laps around Mai Thai in both quality and flavor. Don’t confuse the two–it’s CHIANG Mai Thai you want!

Check out the reviews Rachael Daigel and Tara Morgan forked over. Tara is right. Their tom ka gai is fabulous!

A downtown venture, A Novel Adventure

Ahhhh…..Boise meter-maids DO exist. That was one thing I definitely learned on this photoshoot. Good thing Boise’s parking tickets are a mere $12. Anything more and it might’ve ruined my otherwise pleasant trip to this downtown bookstore, A Novel Adventure.

My synopsis: Great furniture. Books on shelves and art on walls. A week or so after I shot these photos of Mike, I stopped into Alia’s Coffee House (the doorway behind Mike’s shoulder in the photo below takes you right into Alia’s). That sealed the deal. I’ll be back for coffee and perusing a bookstore that I can “get lost in” but that’s not so enormous I will actually get lost in it.

Obviously I was too slow to push February’s First Thursday on you, but read Tara Morgan’s article, A Novel Approach and get yourself downtown next week for March’s artwalk.

¡Holy Molé! Andrade’s Mexican…

As heartbreaking as it was to leave Seattle’s plethora of sushi behind, I managed to cheer myself up with visions of dozens of delicious Mexican restaurants spicing up the Treasure Valley. So, I was pretty excited about getting to photograph my first Mexican food review assignment in Boise.

My synopsis: The decor was great; colorful and dimensional. Plus they have a manager or owner or someone who wanders around and checks on your table to make sure you’re enjoying your food. Some people may find that annoying, but not I. A friendly gentleman making sure my dinner is to my satisfaction? It feels like good ol’ fashioned quality control to me! I ordered one of my favorites–chile verde. It was good, but if that is the best I can find in the area, then you must excuse me, I need a good cry about losing sushi.

Between Nathaniel Hoffman and Amy Atkins you can get their four cents on Andrade’s Mexican Restaurant.

Pamela’s Bakery • Cafe • Espresso

This shoot was for Pamela’s Bakery in Eagle, Idaho. Pamela, her staff & her customers, were all very fun and easy to be around. I even had a handsome young man offer to be in some of the photos. Believe it or not, he was amazingly qualified for the modeling role! If he looks like a natural, it’s because he is. Last year he modeled for a photoshoot for Albertson’s bakery.

My synopsis: Fabulous peanut butter cookies; fun folks. I’ll go back to try much more.

The real reviews, compliments of Deanna Darr & Rachael Daigle.

Boise Weekly & My Maiden Photo Assignment

My first assignment for the Boise Weekly took me to Rudy’s Pub & Grill

My synopsis: I can see myself spending a late afternoon tucked away in one of their booths. Equipped with my laptop (they have wifi!) & a cold beer (perhaps a seasonal microbrew) I would be surrounded by dark wood and smoke-free air…. Ahhhh, what a great change of pace!

For two much better reviews, read what Amy Atkins and DeAnna Darr have to say.
